DE SACIA MOOERS

De Sacia Mooers is a mostly forgotten early screen femme fatale who starred in 100 silent films and was known as “The Blonde Vamp.” She was the third resident of our grand old Hollywood 1925 apartment (after the owner/builder and another silent icon William Farnum, followed by Buster Crabbe!). Ms Mooers lived here many years and died in our apartment—and we’ve never been totally convinced in the 14 years we’ve called this home that she’s ever completely left. I sure hope she likes my portrait.

BARRI GOTIC (GOTHIC QUARTER), Barcelona

The original photo was taken by my friend and boss Felipe Havranek in October, 2023 when I was teaching in Spain as he and I walked through the Quarter late one night. These “streets” were built by the Romans in the Middle Ages when they established their original settlement. The building on the right is the side of the historic Sinagoga Major, built in the third or fourth century and expanded in the 13th century about the time King James visited the synagogue in 1263. The Jews of Barcelona were all slaughtered on these same streets in 1391, which is probably why I felt so creeped out walking through there. But desolate and claustrophobic as it seemed, you can walk anywhere in the Quarter and suddenly the narrow dark path will soon open up to bars and restaurants and squares packed with people. Truly, a remarkable experience.

Gertrude Lawrence and Noel Coward in Dinner at 8:30; London, 1936

 Coward cabled his best friend and favorite muse “Ol’ Gertie” about Dinner at 8:30  in 1929:
“HAVE WRITTEN A DELIGHTFUL NEW COMEDY -(STOP)- GOOD PART FOR YOU -(STOP)- WONDERFUL ONE FOR ME -(STOP)- KEEP YOURSELF FREE FOR AUTUMN PRODUCTION -(STOP)- NOEL”
She replied:
